The mountain culture

In the valleys surrounding Jotunheimen, there are strong cultural and historical roots of Norway. Gudbrandsdalen, Heidal, and Ottadalen, along with all the side valleys and mountain pastures, are shaped by a culture forged by the harsh mountain landscape. Small rural communities have developed unique survival techniques over generations, in harmony with the nature that captivates both residents and visitors from near and far. The tradition of summer farming has been listed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in 2024. Today's consumer society has much to learn from a culture that thrived in tune with nature within a circular economy.

"The Locals"

We have shared this culture for more than 20 years as hosts at Hindsæter. We look forward to refine our storytelling,  dive deeper into cultural history, guide more meaningful walks through nature and the cultural landscape, prepare more food over the campfire, and continue to contribute to a sustainable society. Our base is at Lemonsjøen and at a small crofter’s farm in Heidal, which we also rent out.

Contact

We love to share our knowledge from hospitality, local food and beer brewing traditions, nature values and storytelling - in either norwegian, english or german language. Take contact!

What you asked us:

Many of you asked us if we shall retire after leaving Hindsæter to new and younger hands, well, we will not!

Where do we find you?

We are located with bases both at Lemonsjøen and in Heidal. We know Eastern Jotunheimen very well — especially the Sjodalen valley, where we’ve lived for over 20 years. There are places here where we know every stone and every tree.

Why "The locals"?

We have been guiding and sharing stories in Norwegian, English, and German for many years, and we see a growing market for low-threshold guided nature and cultural experiences among people living in cities — whether in Oslo or Amsterdam. For them, we are the locals.

What kind of tours will you offer?

We offer nature guiding with different themes, and cultural storytelling for individuals and groups. We also provide consultancy services for the tourism industry. More information and bookable tours will be available here during 2026.

Is it possible to rent your crofter's farm?

Yes, the crofter's farm in Heidal will be possible to rent. Booking will be announced soon. Take contact if you are interested before!
